Request options and errors

Every service call accepts the same options on top of its own parameters: request validation, lifecycle hooks, per-call overrides of the global configuration, and a signal to cancel it. This guide covers those options, keeping only the latest of a series of requests, deadlines, and the errors a call rejects with.

Request validation

The SDK includes built-in request validation that verifies each service request adheres to the expected structure before sending it to the API. This validation system helps developers catch errors early and prevents faulty API calls that could result in unnecessary costs.

Benefits of request validation:

Performance considerations: If you're confident about your inputs and want to optimize CPU usage, you can disable validation on a per-service basis:

import { discoverPlaces, geocode, calculateRoute } from '@tomtom-org/maps-sdk/services';

// Disable validation for specific services
await discoverPlaces({
    query: "Eiffel Tower",
    validateRequest: false
});

await geocode({
    query: "Amsterdam",
    validateRequest: false
});

Recommendation: Keep validation enabled during development and testing phases. Only disable it in production when you're confident about input quality.

Service lifecycle hooks: onAPIRequest and onAPIResponse

The SDK allows you to hook into the service request lifecycle for advanced debugging, logging, or analytics. You can use the onAPIRequest and onAPIResponse callbacks to observe outgoing requests and incoming responses.

Example:

await discoverPlaces({
    query: "Eiffel Tower",
    onAPIRequest: (apiRequest) => {
        console.debug('API Request:', apiRequest);
    },
    onAPIResponse: (apiRequest, apiResponse) => {
        console.debug('API Response:', apiResponse);
    }
});

These hooks are useful for debugging, analytics, or custom logging. They do not modify the request or response.

apiRequest is what the SDK sends: { url, headers }, plus data on a POST (EV charging availability passes a bare URL). Routing, traffic incident details and the places services carry the API key in headers['TomTom-Api-Key'] rather than the URL, so redact that header as well as any key= parameter before logging. Proxying your API calls lists which service sends which.

Per-call overrides

The API key, language, base URL, display units and retry behaviour are set once for the whole application with TomTomConfig โ€” see Global configuration. Any of them can be passed to a single call instead, which wins over the global value for that call only.

import { discoverPlaces } from '@tomtom-org/maps-sdk/services';

// Answers in French for this call only; later calls keep the global language
await discoverPlaces({ query: "restaurants", language: 'fr-FR' });

Each service picks its own endpoint path and API version; neither can be overridden. To route every service through a proxy that holds your API key server-side, set the global commonBaseURL โ€” see Proxying your API calls.

Cancelling a request

Every service that takes a parameters object accepts a signal, an AbortSignal. Aborting it cancels the underlying HTTP request and rejects the call with an SDKAbortError, whose name is 'AbortError'.

The single-result helpers discoverOnePlace and geocodeOne take the signal in their params form: discoverOnePlace({ query, signal }).

Aborting also interrupts the SDK while it waits to retry a rate-limited (429) response, so a cancelled call never sits out a pending backoff.

Keeping only the latest request

Cancellation matters most when a new request supersedes an older one: a click lookup, a search-as-you-type box, a search re-run on every map move. Without it, a slow earlier response can arrive after a faster later one and overwrite it.

createLatestRequest holds one such request at a time. Each run aborts the one before it and hands your callback a fresh signal; cancel aborts without starting another.

import { createLatestRequest, reverseGeocode } from '@tomtom-org/maps-sdk/services';

const latestLookup = createLatestRequest();

map.mapLibreMap.on('click', async (event) => {
    const lookup = await latestLookup.run((signal) =>
        reverseGeocode({ position: event.lngLat.toArray(), signal })
    );
    if (!lookup.current) return; // a newer click or a cancel retired it
    showAddress(lookup.value);
});

clearButton.addEventListener('click', latestLookup.cancel);

Deadlines

There is no per-call timeout option. Compose a deadline onto the signal instead, which lets one call carry both a deadline and your own cancellation:

// Give a search box a short deadline โ€” a fast response is expected
await getSearchSuggestions({
    query: "coffee",
    origin: [4.9041, 52.3676],
    signal: AbortSignal.timeout(3000)
});

// A longer one for complex routing, still retired by the next run
const latestRoute = createLatestRequest();
const route = await latestRoute.run((signal) =>
    calculateRoute({
        locations: [[4.9041, 52.3676], [2.3522, 48.8566]],
        signal: AbortSignal.any([signal, AbortSignal.timeout(15000)])
    })
);

A deadline that fires rejects with SDKAbortError, the same as a manual abort; check error.cause to tell the two apart. Under createLatestRequest the deadline is the only abort that rejects, since a retired run resolves { current: false } instead.

The retry.timeoutMs global setting is unrelated. It caps how long the SDK keeps retrying a rate-limited (429) response, and is not a limit on any single request. See Global configuration.

Error handling

Every rejection is an SDKError. An HTTP failure is an SDKServiceError, carrying the response's status, and a cancelled call is an SDKAbortError, which carries none:

import { discoverPlaces, SDKAbortError } from '@tomtom-org/maps-sdk/services';

try {
    const results = await discoverPlaces({
        query: "coffee",
        geoBias: { position: [4.9041, 52.3676] },
        signal: AbortSignal.timeout(5000)
    });

    console.log(results);
} catch (error) {
    // A cancelled call carries no status, so match it before the status checks
    if (error instanceof SDKAbortError) {
        console.error('Search timed out');
    } else if (error.status === 401) {
        console.error('Authentication failed - check API key');
        // Redirect to login or show API key configuration
    } else if (error.status === 429) {
        console.error('Rate limit exceeded - implement retry logic');
        // Implement exponential backoff retry
    } else if (error.status >= 500) {
        console.error('Server error - implement fallback');
        // Use cached data or alternative service
    } else {
        console.error('Request failed:', error.message);
        // Show user-friendly error message
    }
}
